Prologue:
The eighties had the Oilers, the nineties had…well, a couple of teams, and now, as we embark on the 2002/03 season, destiny’s team wears TRIBE red and black.
Yes boys and girls, barely five years after its’ humble entrance into the formidable ASHL, our heroes have emerged as a force in the upper divisions of mens recreational, semi-contact hockey.
Oh what a difference five years makes. Years of toiling in the wastelands of divisions 10-12, Tribe members played before sparse crowds for virtual peanuts, producing only meager successes. Now, as the team prepares for what will surely be a ground-breaking sixth go at the elusive Canlan Cup, things have certainly changed at the Wig-Wam.
Flashback to last season, as the Tribe, buoyed by the return of old hands Tony Felicella and Mark DDDDDDooooootttttt, (well, you get the picture) made a run at the previously unattainable single digit divisions. New addition Kevin Qualtrough provided a much needed injection to the team’s on-ice performances and general chemistry, also giving the squad a financial boost with his inhuman post-game beer consumption totals.
By mid-November, a rollicking start to the season had erstwhile captain Shawn Halford pondering two difficult decisions…
Do we move up to…gasp….division 9?
Do we allow 12th division Those Guys to finally end B-Man’s waiver wire experience by selecting him as their third line left winger?
Fortunately for Tribe fans everywhere, the answers were…in this order….yes, and a resounding no!!!
Fast forward six months and both B-Man and the Tribe were flying high, with the team only one tough, three-game series short of the divisional playdowns and B-Man scoring for both his team and his legion of fans.
Now, as we enter a new campaign, let’s see what instant fame and fortune has done to the lives of our favourite sons…..
